Annette Laing

Artist statement

My body of work this year has focused on making connections with nature. The main aim of my work is to encourage the viewer to consider their own position within whatever environment they find themselves in and their relationship to it. It invites the audience to consider concepts of social responsibility.

My primary concern is with recording the sounds that one hears when in nature - both underfoot and overhead, paying attention to the textures that are encountered, the feelings that are conjured up, the colours that are influenced by the weather, seasons or even time of day. During the research phase this is the narrative process that I go through to get to my final piece.

In order to achieve this, I take walks within the natural environment, photographing and gathering found objects and documenting this through the use of traditional and new media techniques.
