Gerry McCluskey

Artist statement

GERRY McCLUSKEY (b. 1963 in Glasgow, Scotland) lives and works in Kilsyth, North Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Although having a career of over 30 years in the commercial art industry where technical illustration and graphic design were his chief disciplines McCluskey now finds himself drawn to the art form known as Artists Books, which, as described by Wikipedia are: works of art that utilise the form of the book… often published in small editions, and sometimes produced as one-of-a-kind objects.

On returning to full time education to study Art & Design several of his projects have included the artists book as a method of expressing a concept, including ‘The Martial Artists Book’, ‘Blah, Blah, Blah’ and now this year’s ‘The Book Tower’. Skills required in producing these pieces include graphic design, illustration and model making as well as an interest in history, music and philosophy.

McCluskey’s latest piece ‘The Book Tower’ is one which he sees evolving just as the fortress structures known as castles were repurposed or ultimately fell into ruin over time. Likewise, the various volumes which comprise the set of books within the work may be updated, enhanced or even replaced in the future.

Previously McCluskey has exhibited to the public through various academic exhibitions. His work has also sold commercially as limited-edition prints.
